Are you as sad as I am? Though I’ve only bought one item, I loved browsing the site and it’s simplistic ads.
But it’s true. Our “ethical” clothing line has been dropping profits by the millions each year. The auditor, Deloitte & Touche, blames “material weaknesses” as one of the downfalls. Another reason may have been the stricter law enforcements of ICE, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, many of their non US citizen workers have been forced to leave the company, causing a severe loss in their manufacturing.
There’s been mixed reactions to this news. According to several forum sites, it seems the general public doesn’t seem to mind the loss of this eco-friendly company. Controversial topics involving the many sexual harassment claims filed against CEO Dov Charney and the underage looking models used in suggestive advertising, will American Apparel be missed? Or has it’s decreasing popularity been a sign that it may just be another company to slip through the cracks? Time will only tell.
When it comes down to it, behind the controversy that made the company stand out, it was mainly a tee shirt and leggings store. And with this economy, who can afford something as simple as that when other stores are selling them for so much less?
I leave readers with this: How can American Apparel be saved? Should it be saved?
