It took me a while to like the idea of the Toms canvas shoe. At first, I thought they looked a bit like slippers, but now that I’ve seen people wear them around campus, I see they are a new form of foot wear, ideal for a casual day. While mine are on their way to me, I thought it’d be good to do some research on what kinds of outfits look best with them.
Black Toms: I think when one choses a pair of black slip ons, the goal is to make them blend in with the rest of the outfit, so a casual look is ideal. By choosing subtle colors and patterns along with a cute pair of bottoms such as a pair of belted, high waisted, or cuffed shorts, the toms will blend in making them more ideal then a distracting sandal or overly feminine ballet flat.
Also, with muted colors, you can play around with more boldly colored accessories, so have fun!
Red Toms: I don’t know why, but when I see a pair of red toms, I automatically label them as “nautical”. So to play with that theme, choose a tricolor scheme and an occasional garment with either a bold pattern or small detail.
When it comes to accessorizing, try mixing both subtle neutral colors with bold ones, like the hat and sunglasses below. This way, your color blocking will be kept balanced.
Patterned Toms: Any type of shoe with a bold pattern should be the main focus of an outfit. But rather than to choose several neutrals, try playing off a color in the shoe. By choosing pieces that vary in texture and composition, such as a cotton dress and denim jacket, the patterned toms will work with the outfit, instead of against it.
- Color blocking is most important – explore new color schemes and break up the texture in your ensemble
- Pick a theme – Toms are pretty basic, so when you pick a theme, others will get the vibe you’re going for, and you’ll turn that basic shoe into a chic casual piece of footwear.
