So, lucky for me the Style network has been playing the only John Hughes film I had yet to watch – Something Kind of Wonderful. I found it to be completely charming and was so inspired by Mary Stewart Masterson’s character Watts. From her IDGAF personality to her sense of style, I’m kind of wanting to be her right now.
A conversation between Watts and bad boy Ray sums up her grungy tom boy fashion sense pretty well.
Watts: Enlighten me.
Ray: Because you radiate this sexual vibe and I know that if you wanted, you could be a girl.
So for the days you’re feeling rebellious, break out the leather and turn up the 80s power ballads. Here are some staple pieces to collect to achieve Watts’ style.
Notice that there are plenty accessories. Though Watts’ clothes are relatively plain, she accessorizes heavily wearing dangly silver earrings (or hoops), a watch with a stretch band, circular sunglasses, a collection of rings, fingerless gloves (hers had this fabulous 5 inch fringes) and a dog tag necklace.
As for Watts’ clothing, you can either do it like her and wear lots of loose fitting garments to achieve that androgynous appeal, or make it modern and wear more fitted jeans and tops. The majority of Watts’ wardrobe is solid colors or muted prints, which really makes the bits of leather and accessories stand out.
