For many years now, I’ve been a loyal Oscars viewer. As a child, my mom and I would watch the pre-show and pick out our favorite dresses, making believe that if we could go, which dress we’d wear. Now as a wife to a film enthusiast, I watch not only for the fashion but for the recognition of films. My husband and I make it a goal to check out Oscar nominated films, so we enjoy making guesses on who will win. This year however, I noticed something unlike previous years during the pre-show – the little blue ribbon.
A subtle yet eye popping accent, this little blue ribbon is part of the ACLU. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a “nonprofit, nonpartisan, legal and advocacy organization devoted to protecting the rights of everyone in America”. In an explanation to ET News Online they delve further into what that little blue ribbon represents stating: “This symbol of solidarity with the ACLU acknowledges the commitment of those on the front lines — in the courts, legislatures and in the streets — who are working to ensure that our precious freedoms and values are preserved.”
Oscar nominee Lin Manuel Miranda was quoted by the ACLU Twitter as saying: “I’m wearing an ACLU ribbon because they’re fighting incredible fights right now for American ideals.”
Other celebs such as Busy Phillips, Casey Affleck, Ruth Negga, and Karlie Kloss also donned the ACLU ribbon.
The Academy Awards is a time for reflection, appreciation, and the celebration of culture. I think it’s great that people are using it as a platform to spread awareness. Sometimes audiences only view for the fantasized glamour of it all, but it’s things like this that keep us grounded and remind us what’s going on in our country and how we can be of help. Now this wouldn’t be a complete Oscar post without my favorite looks. Here are the looks from the 2017 Academy Awards that captured my inspiration. These are some gowns my mother would definitely approve of.
- Brie Larson in Oscar De La Renta
- Viola Davis in Armani Privé
- Kirsten Dunst in Dior
- Olivia Hamilton – I guess no one cares who she’s wearing because I can’t find it anywhere
