This was a question that I had asked myself upon the emergence of this legging brand in the summer of 2016. Though the brand began its journey in 2015, I had not heard anything about them. At the time, I was working in a clothing store and one of my customers was telling me about the soft leggings with wild patterns. Then I started seeing my old high school friends share photos of their Lularoe leggings on social media. I thought some of the patterns were really cute, but I couldn’t justify paying $25 for leggings.
It wasn’t until December where an older lady at my church started talking about the brand. Apparently, a few of the teachers at a nearby middle school were combining their efforts to sell Lularoe as a fundraiser for the middle school. She invited me to an event held at the middle school library and I told her I’d go. I was curious after all and was down to pay premium prices if it went to a good cause. This marked the beginning of an obsession and me sort of joining a cult.
My first pair of leggings were blue and red with a King and Queen of diamonds printed all over. They were a little wild for my taste, but boy were they amazingly soft. It’s almost like the feeling you get when you’ve just shaved your legs and you can’t stop touching them. The waistband was also really nice – it’s really wide with soft elastic, kind of reminds me of yoga pants if you didn’t fold it over. What’s interesting regarding the sizing is that Lularoe makes their leggings in 2 sizes – OS (0-12) and TC (Tall and Curvy 10-20).
From here, I started looking online at other prints. Each consultant may have varying prints in their inventory, so you can shop around and see a variety of products. There is also a limited run of each print, so if you see that pair of leggings with lipsticks printed all over, you better snag them because you may not see them again, or have to pay a higher price on eBay or Poshmark. Then there are the unicorns (aka – the really rare prints that happen to be the cutest). The unicorns make people like me obsessed with constantly checking updated inventory of several consultants.
This is what makes shopping for Lularoe so addictive. It’s a hunt and it’s competitive. The live sales that consultants do online through Facebook or Periscope allow their audience to comment “SOLD” as they are holding a pair of exclusive leggings, so you get a rush trying to be the first to “win”.
So 9 pairs of leggings later, I have bought my first dress. And like the leggings, I couldn’t justify spending $35+ on an oversized shirt. This weekend however, this attitude of mine changed. I attended my first Lularoe party held at a local boutique. Instantly I fell in love with this floral Carly. A Carly style dress is like a long flowy t-shirt. The founder of Lularoe names each of her designs after family members and friends, hence the other names of shirts, skirts, and dresses (Amelia, Jade, Joy, Cassie, etc.). The consultant present at the event showed me all the ways you can style a Carly dress, making this “oversized t-shirt”, a versatile product.
In conclusion, the comfort and versatility aspects of the brand combined with the exclusivity of the products make this a really fun brand to shop. Then there’s also the bonding ladies have over “roeing” (the act of wearing Lularoe, see #thisishowiroe) and sharing their styling techniques. I personally am a big fan of the sizing of the leggings. Having two main size categories feels really inclusive and doesn’t isolate people into thinking they couldn’t pull off a style because of their size.
So get out there and shop with your local consultants! Chances are, you are helping a stay at home mom earn some extra money or someone who’s always dreamed of owning a business.
